High Infidelity

July 07, 2004 - 4:03 p.m.

I am quite unsurprised by this article in Newsweek that discusses the "New Infidelity" as practiced by women.

I am not sure about their assessment of it, though. I think there might be an age factor in there... my ex-wife was seven years younger, and didn't seem to have the same emotional wrangling about sucking other guys off in two or three states that one might normally expect. It seemed like she could rationalize almost any behavior that suited her view of herself, which seemed to be primarily as victim or as entitled party.

Don't get me wrong: I had a very short fling with a woman who turned out to be a complete lunatic, but I knew that I should never have let it get physical and knew, in real time, that I was much more attracted to the idea of novel relations than I was to the actual event. I think in her case, though, she didn't form strong attachments to these guys, she would just seek out whoever seemed to offer the most appreciation with the fewest strings.

The woman in the picture with the article has pretty cute calves, though. I'd hit it.

This tasty quote:

The reality is this: American women today have more opportunity to fool around than ever; when they do fool around, they're more likely to tell their friends about it, and those friends are more likely to lend them a sympathetic ear. They probably use technology to facilitate their affairs, and if they get caught, they're almost as likely to wind up in a wing chair in a marriage counselor's office as in divorce court.

Yup. Guys who cheat are reviled as scum, often even by their own friends. Women who cheat are secretly cheered by and sometimes enabled by, their friends.

Seen it. Didn't buy the t-shirt, though.
