Listening to it in the car on the way to work, I was struck by Jelly Roll Morton's 1938 Library of Congress recording of "Tiger Rag." It's a masterpiece, even if it's a little uneven around the edges. In three years, he'd be dead in Los Angeles of heart failure at age 51. The clock keeps ticking.
