Lots of money

May 08, 2007 - 2:57 p.m.

Days do go by sometimes. I've been enormously busy at work and elsewhere, so writing here hasn't been the easiest thing to work in.

The battle with the AppleTV was a success... after two successful weeks, it decided to freak out and stop talking to my iMac. However, I finally found out the cause: a bad interaction between my EyeTV 250's new AppleTV-friendly software update and a security update Apple issued for QuickTime, version 7.1.6. Turns out that the EyeTV software was patching the QuickTime update in a way that scuzzed everything up. I reverted the iMac to a disk image about four weeks old, before both updates, and found that it was indeed the EyeTV screwing things up. I reported it, and within a day, they had issued a patch fixing everything.

If you happen to have a PowerPC-based Mac, an Elgato EyeTV and an AppleTV, you will likely encounter this problem. Go over to the Apple support forum for AppleTV and look for posts about disappearing AppleTVs and you will find a link to the updated EyeTV software.

Almost all my demos are over at work... it was an amazing success. We succeeded in convincing executives to abandon a buggy, hard-to-use system Lockheed-Martin had developed for us (at a cost of several million dollars) and take the cool features out of it and put it into my system, which has been running happily at high volumes of usage for nine years now. Even better, not continuing to use Lockheed, in addition to saving everyone's sanity, will save us about eleven million dollars over the next five years, not that I'll see any of that.

So, I'll have a bunch of stuff to do this summer. Something else I have to do has been blown off till the end of the summer, so I don't have to worry about it, and I am pleased.

About the only thing I lack these days is enough time and money to enjoy it all.
