A challenge for you

July 03, 2006 - 11:25 a.m.

You know it's a slow day at work when you go into the bathroom and the lights automatically turn on. This of course means that they automatically turned off at some time in the past, indicating that nobody's been in the bathroom for at least half an hour. This, in the middle of a Monday morning when normally, flatulent old guys would be in there, pooping their coffee-propelled brains out.

Not today.

As they say, nobody on the road, nobody on the beach. I drove down from Suzanne's this morning, light traffic on I-95, easy parking at work. It's going to be hot, probably hotter than yesterday, but all the New Jersey parks and monuments are closed thanks to Them Dumbass State Legislators' inability to get a budget together. Strangely, even the casinos in Atlantic City will have to close Wednesday because they are required to have state monitors working, and they won't be because of the budget, which means a zillion dollars in taxes won't get collected.

But of course the toll collectors on the Turnpike are working, even though they're collecting far less.

Dumb shits.

Suzanne and I went shopping again. This time, she found a really nice light cream-colored skirt and some simple brown pumps to go along with them. She was looking for some black heels to match some other things, but all the stuff we could find at Macy's or Nordstrom or Lord & Taylor were just... horrible. Either way too pointy, or the heels were too high, or they were too ornate. And some of the non-pumps they had were laughably stupid looking. It was hilarious watching these women with straight faces trying to decide if these ludicrous, gaudy pieces of crap were worth buying.

Guys don't have that problem. Guys can go into any mall, anywhere in the country, any time of the year, and find a classic wingtip or a loafer. I dare you to go to Nordstrom and find a simple black pump with a 3" heel and a rounded toe in leather. I'll wait right here.
