Face the face

September 10, 2005 - 10:05 p.m.

I had a very, very long time last night to think about what I really like in women, so I did.

I think every guy should do this. Just go somewhere, and sit and watch women. Not ogle them, just watch them, a whole lot of them, and pay attention to what catches your eye. I did this for a couple of hours, and I was surprised at what I learned about me.

To do this, I went somewhere I don't go very much, but which tends to have a higher traffic of women my age than other places. Sat at the bar out of the way and just... watched. Made notes to myself, and made some sense out of the notes later. Yes, I know I've talked about what I like in women's bodies, but this was all about faces.

I love a steady, bright-eyed gaze. Women who have dull eyes, or who look tired or unfocused, never seem to catch my eye. My favorite has to be dark brown, but it's that energy, that sparkle, that really catches me.

I like ears. More correctly, I like seeing ears, so women who tend to keep their hair pulled back off their forehead and ears catch my attention immediately. The forehead should he high, rounded and clear, with distinct but arched eyebrows with a definite separation between them and feathered away at the edges.

I like a distinct but gentle nose, not usually the little turned-up 'cute' nose, but something straighter and more distinct.

Something else that catches my eye: women who naturally smile. By this, I mean, at rest, their cheeks are slightly taut and slightly rounded -- some people call these "chipmunk cheeks" and you often find them in women who wore braces at some time in their lives -- and their upper lip arches so as to show a little of their front teeth. A little "egg tooth" on the upper lip is pretty cute. Babies have this, and if it's still present in adulthood, I find it irresistable.

Women I find attractive will usually not be heavily-tanned or heavily made-up, but can do the makeup thing well if needed. On such women, bright red lipstick can be an amazing surprise and very attractive because their hair and eyes will be dark and the contrast will be striking.

I do like women in glasses, but not huge, wide fat-girl glasses. Smaller, rounder, dark or wire frames. I don't like sunglasses on anyone at any time.

There was one young woman who came in who had a much different look, but she was so stunning I had to mention her. She brought a date, and she was in a beautiful blue dress, powder-blue rayon, knee-length with a draped cowl neckline and a sapphire pendant. Not a single wrinkle in the dress, as if she had stood up in her black heels all day. She had wavy auburn hair, pale white skin and bright green eyes.

She was gorgeous and unselfconscious in that way that young women can be. What amazed me was her date: a guy who looked like he'd just gotten off work at the pizza place nearby, though I knew he hadn't, and he seemed fixated on the baseball game on television and barely looked at or talked to this gorgeous girl.

Stupid, stupid boy.
