We suck

August 11, 2005 - 1:36 p.m.

Know what the most important news story in the world was yesterday? I bet you don't.

Here it is.

Funny... notice how I had to post a link from the Billings Gazette? Not the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN, or anything like that. The biggest damn story in the world yesterday, and you didn't even see it featured on any of the major news outlets in the United States.

Basically, for more than 20 years, there's been a dispute over softwood lumber (mostly pine) between the US and Canada. The United States accused Canada of illegally subsidizing the production and shipment of lumber. Canada denied it, and after more than 20 years of disputes, Canada won at every turn under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

That is not the news.

The news is: Canada won, and the United States is basically saying, well, tough shit, we're not going to abide by that decision, we'll keep charging you tariffs and we won't refund the billions we illegally collected in the past.

Let me get this straight: WE talked Canada into NAFTA. WE set up all the review and mediation processes. WE asked for a special committee to review the decision yet again. WE lost every time.

So WE have decided we're just going to ignore the decision and in so doing, ignore the treaty itself.

WE should not be real surprised when other countries basically tell US to fuck off when they get decisions they don't like from all these other fucking globalization-promotion organizations like GATT and WTO. Or when Iran builds an assload of nuclear weapons in violation of NNPT. Or when Saudi Arabia stomps on human rights. Or when Sudan kills their own people by the millions.

They're just following our example.

We are the biggest bunch of losers the world has ever seen. We are The Nodded States of Murka... The World's Cocksucker.

We now return you to your regular blog.
