Techie stuff: NetFront 3.1 for Sony Clie UX series

June 09, 2004 - 2:44 p.m.

I'm putting this here in the hopes that somebody who can use it will republish this information. If you have a Sony Clie UX-40 or UX-50 handheld -- this is a PalmOS device with tons of features built in, and might be the best PDA in the world right now -- you have no doubt tried to use the NetFront 3.0 browser built into it.

Well, it sorta works but sorta sucks. Access (the publisher) updated NetFront to version 3.1, which fixes a bunch of problems with it. The catch? They don't offer a download of the PalmOS version. Period. You're supposed to get it from Sony, and Sony... isn't offering an update to users of these "older" $700 PDAs. The "new" Sonys, which are somewhat inferior, have NetFront 3.1 on them, but Sony doesn't offer any way to update the browser.

This is a typical Sonyism... ruin great hardware by stupid marketing and lackadaisical support.

However, there's a solution. If you or anyone you know has one of these great beasts, go here for information on how to update it. Repost this anywhere you can.
